2007 Appalachia Mission Trip : Looking for something better to do on spring break??? We took a very unique trip this year to the hills of Osage, WV where members of our youth ministry program spent a week working, praying and living within the local community. We joined with two other youth groups and one school group to work for local families and the community center. The region of the Appalachian mountains we traveled to is among the poorest in the country. Among our projects were painting, cooking, cleaning, child care, tutoring, sheetrocking, deck building, flooring, furniture moving, and a whole lot more! We worked for four families, helped renovate a future ‘ReStore’ (a Habitat for Humanity supply store) and assisted within the community center itself. Our host, ‘The Shack Neighborhood House’, has been serving with us for six years now and each spring we look forward to working together. ‘The Shack’ is the sole source of help for families in two different counties and they rely on groups like us to keep them going. We raise our own funds, buy our own supplies and put in some hard-core workdays, but don’t worry…if you’re thinking about joining us-there’s no experience necessary. We learn as we go, and over the years we’ve completed over 25 projects! Have you ever wanted to do something great for someone else? This may be your chance…next year’s trip is scheduled for March 24th-29th. Maybe YOU can help us make a difference!

2007 NJ State Youth Rally : Every year, Catholic high school youth groups from across the state of New Jersey meet at Six Flags Great Adventure for a day of fun in the sun (or, as we experienced this year, rain!). On May 20th, our group from St. Bart’s joined this gathering of thousands of teenagers and enjoyed everything the amusement park had to offer. The day ended with a memorable mass in the park’s Arena, presided by our own Archbishop Meyers.

2007 Ski Trip : Some came for the ski slopes, some came for the snow tubes, some came for the hot chocolate, some just came to hang out with friends or make new ones… but no matter why we came, we had a great time! We boarded a bus with youth from St. Michael’s Church in Cranford, then headed to upstate New York for a weekend of snowy fun. Some of us went tubing for the first time, some tried to ski without snow shoes, some had a fierce game of football in the snow. Whatever the diversions, February 23-25 just flew by… or was that Kelly that just flew by? Watch out!

2006 Pie Bake Overnight : We got your apple pies, we got your pumpkin pies… we even got you chocolate-caramel-pecan pies! Peeling/coring/slicing apples was clearly down to a science, after the youth group’s collective years of experience, and crimping pie crusts was an art some of us had clearly already perfected. Making caramel and melting chocolate—clearly new skills, but what fun we had in the kitchen! How exactly does one produce 220 pies in 24 hours? The teamwork was visible from the moment you entered, and each pie was the work of many young people… who hoped every pie tasted as good as it looked! A tremendous amount of hard work went into preparing all the supplies, making the pies, baking around the clock… selling them was the treat! Thank you once again to everyone who supported us in this fundraiser, which brought in a whopping $1500 profit. A special note of thanks to ShopRite of Clark for their generous donation of pie pans and boxes. From all of us in the kitchen—we hope you enjoyed the pies!

2007 Retreat: Finding GodSpace in MySpace : Our lives are in constant motion! It can sometimes be exciting, exhausting, stressful… but is it ever peaceful? Can we ever just be silent? Can we be still and feel God’s presence in our lives? Our youth group retreat this year provided us an opportunity do just that. It was a three-day time out from our everyday lives, and a chance to re-evaluate our relationships with each other and with God. It was also a chance to challenge ourselves physically in a series of memorable challenge-course activities that tied into various talks throughout the retreat. After we settled in, we set up our accounts, our profiles, our friends list. We talked about who our real friends are, about who we trust and how trusting we are or should be. Just as we pushed ourselves to climb higher on the rock-climbing wall, we questioned our spiritual growth. We paralleled navigating through the internet with navigating through our lives. During our reconciliation service we had the opportunity to start over, where our lives had taken a wrong turn. In the end, it was the image of the web that brought it all together. Those interconnections that are created throughout our lives, and in a special way, on our retreat by the individuals who affected us during the weekend, were visible in the web we created in our final sharing. The weekend concluded with the celebration of the liturgy at the 6pm mass, where the parish community welcomed us home.
